Being a multicultural society, there are quite a number of dining options available. It’s a matter of choosing which cuisine you feel like having. Following are a few of our suggestions.
Tipping
Tipping? Are we talking horseracing? We generally do not tip at restaurants or any eating establishments. You will get the same level of service no matter what and the wait staff will not run after you if you do not tip. Yes, you can tip if you want, but this is not mandatory. But don’t spoil it for everyone by being too generous.
Dining Options
The following are just suggestions and are not ranked according to any criteria. It’s just something we think you may want to try.
There are three things you need to try… Laksa, Kebab and Meat Pie. You cannot leave Sydney without trying these.
Ho Jiak (Town Hall and Haymarket)
Park St and George St, Corner Park Street, Town Hall, Sydney New South Wales 2000 ·
Malaysian restaurant. Close to Wyndham are the Town Hall branch just across from the QVB on Pitt Street and the other is on Hay Street in Haymarket, across the road from Paddy’s Market. There is another branch in the Dining District in Chatswood, but it’s a 20 minute train ride from Town Hall station to Chatswood, but it may be worth going to Chatswood.
Bar Totti’s
330A-330B George Street, Sydney
This is just across from the LRT Wynyard Station. Can’t be missed as they have alfresco seating and they’re usually almost full. Good food and nice ambiance.
Grounds in the City
Shop RG 12/500 George Street, Sydney
They are located in The Galleries, just across the road from QVB. Take the Light Rail (L2 or L3 line) towards Circular Quay and get off at the QVB stop. It’s a short walk from there. It’s a good place to have brunch.
Mr Wong
May be a bit tricky to find. Take the LRT and get off at the Bridge Street stop. Walk down on Bridge Street. Just past the first building is a lane way on the right. Turn into it and you will find Mr Wong along that street on the right hand side. This is a Cantonese restaurant. Good food!
Fratelli Fresh
Darling Harbour and Westfield Shopping Centre
Italian restaurant. There are two branches close to Wyndham, one is on 14 Darling Drive Darling Harbour and the other is on level 6 in the Westfield Shopping Centre on Pitt Street. I would suggest Darling Harbour as they do have alfresco seating
Restaurant Hubert
Fancy French. Good place for a special night out and intimate dining with a live jazz band.
Ichiban Boshi
Another Japanese restaurant in The Galeries, one level up from Yayoi. Not to be missed if you love ramen
Chat Thai
Circular Quay and Westfield Shopping Centre
As the name suggests, this is a Thai restaurant. Good casual dining. The Circular Quay branch is on 1 Macquarie Place. The building is called The Gateway and it is on level 1. The Westfield branch is in Level 6 of Westfield, this is on Pitt Street.
Saisons
400 Barangaroo Ave, Barangaroo
A contemporary French Bistro and Wine Bar. Nice place to have lunch in after your leisurely stroll along Barangaroo. They do have a nice selection of lunch specials.
Meat and Wine Co
Ground Level, International Tower one, 100 Barangaroo Ave, Barangaroo
Steaks? Then you’ve come to the right place. As their website says ‘it’s a celebration of Afro-centric dining fused with modern Australian cuisine’.
Four Frogs
1 Macquarie Place, Circular Quay
This is also in the Gateway, across the road from the Circular Quay train station. It is a French Creperie ideal for brunch or a light lunch.
District Dining (Chatswood)
For a good selection of Asian cuisine, try going to Chatswood. It is a 20 minute train ride on the Suburban train system. Take the train from Town Hall station (you can also take it from Wynyard or Central Station depending on this is closer to where you are) on the North Shore line towards Hornsby (sometimes just Gordon). The Dining District is just next to the train station. There are heaps of other dining places around Chatswood, but there’s already ample choices here.
Hawker Lane (Chatswood)
Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood)
Also in Chatswood, the layout is slightly different where you purchase your food from stalls and sit at common tables. This is mainly Asian food. To get to Hawker Lane, from the Chatswood train station, walk down Victoria Ave. You will find an entrance to Wesfield on the right and there will be a sign pointing to the entrance to Hawker Lane. Watch out for the Miniso shop. The entrance is just next to it.
Born by Tapavino
9A 23 Barangaroo Ave, Barangaroo
Spanish cuisine. ‘sip-a-little-bit-of-this-and-eat-a-little-bit-of-that’, Tapavino started as a Sherry Bar in Sydney. Nice place to sit and spend the time as you nibble and sip. A sister restaurant is Balcon by Tapavino which is on 17 Bligh Street, Sydney which might be easier to get to from Wyndham.
Braza Churrascaria
Brazilian barbeque house. Come hungry! It is important to book and you will have a seating time of 2 hours, although you may not need the 2 hours as you will most probably be so full after the first hour. It is all you can eat on the one price.
Regent Place
In the ground floor and basement of Regent Place is a selection of Asian (mainly Japanese) restaurants.
Sydney Fish Market
A must not miss if you love seafood. Purchase your food from the shops inside and take a table on the outside to enjoy the sun. Just do not feed the birds!!! Or they will flock and you will not be able to dine in peace. To get to the fish market, take the L1 line on the Light Rail system towards Dulwich Hill. The closest to Wyndham is the Capitol Square stop. Get off at the Fish Market stop and it is a short walk from there. If you are going in a group, get someone to get a table while the rest get the food. It gets crowded sometimes and it’s difficult to get a table.
Food Courts and Eat Streets
For food court options, most shopping centres will have one.
Westfield Shopping Centre (Pitt Street Mall) is on level 5
Myers (Pitt Street Mall) is in the basement
The Gateway (Circular Quay) there is one on the ground and the upper floors
Galeries on George Street (across the road from QVB) is on the ground and upper floors
Dickson Street, Chinatown is on the street level
Spice Alley (Chippendale) is on street level
